Corporate Governance in Pakistan: Practices and Challenges

This study digs deep into the corporate governance culture among Pakistani firms from the lens of the legislation, modus operandi, and tribulations that these organizations face. Using a combination of both qualitative and quantitative research designs, the paper embarks through document review on established legal statutes and corporate governance codes, enhanced with interviews from various key stakeholders and single case studies of selected firms. This approach allows for an in depth analysis of the theoretical and empirical dimensions of corporate governance in Pakistan. The main events show that poor governance practices, in relation to adherence to international norms, transparency and board accountability, have been a cornerstone of management and have tested all international standards. The findings also expose the gap between formal regulatory imperative and practice, which in many settings is mediated by the influence of cultural norms and market dynamics.
